Temporary mask measures implemented at Lakeland Catholic Schools

BONNYVILLE (September 3, 2021) - Earlier today, the Government of Alberta announced that starting September 4, masks will be mandatory for all indoor public spaces and workplaces in response to an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases and low vaccination rates.

Lakeland Catholic School Division (LCSD) has reviewed its Back to School Plan and is making adjustments in order to align with the temporary measures announced by the province.

Effective Tuesday, September 7, masks will be mandatory for all students in Grades 4-12, staff, and visitors in the common areas of our buildings (i.e. entrance ways, hallways, cafeterias), while students in Kindergarten to Grade 3 are encouraged to wear masks in these spaces.

Masks do not have to be worn in classrooms, outdoors, or other areas where students are participating in instructional activities such as the library, CTS labs, and gymnasium.

Students and staff who choose to wear masks in instructional areas will be supported in their decision to do so.

Masks are still mandatory for all staff and students while riding on the school bus or division provided transportation, as per the provincial health guidelines.

Those who are unable to wear a mask due to a medical condition may apply for an exemption.

There are no other changes to the Back to School Plan; cohorts are not required and  LCSD will not be limiting extra-curricular activities or events at this time.

“Lakeland Catholic will continue to monitor the situation and, as we have throughout the pandemic, will adjust our plan and protocols as necessary,” Superintendent Pamela Guilbault said.“We thank our staff, students, and families for their cooperation and understanding as we adjust to these changing conditions.”
