Enrolments

Lakeland Catholic enrolment is up by approximately three per cent. Several schools are experiencing significant growth, including Assumption Jr/Sr High School in Cold Lake, which has seen an increase of almost 80 students.

Superintendent Joe Arruda will provide a further overview of student enrolment after the official numbers are released after September 30.

Lieutenant Governor’s Award

Grade 10 Assumption student Corbin Williams has received the Lieutenant Governor’s Award.

Board Chair Mary Anne Penner congratulated Corbin on receiving the honour.

Minister’s Youth Council

Penner also took the time to congratulate École Notre Dame High School student Salma Elzayat.

Elzayat, who is in Grade 10, has been selected as one of 40 students to sit on the Minister’s Youth Council.

Presentations to the Board

Bernard Chartrand made a presentation to the board regarding installing greenhouses at local schools as a way of educating students about the farming industry.

In addition to providing a learning opportunity, he said, greenhouses would allow students to grow their own food.

Chartrand also suggested a partnership that would have each child in Grade 2 and 3 plant a tree every year.

Clayton Bellamy, of the Bellamy Foundation for the Arts, and Michael Topylki, secretary-treasurer for the foundation, also made a presentation to the Board of Trustees. Their request was for financial or in-kind support for the construction of a theatre. The space is being built at Bonnyville Centralized High School.

Construction of the theatre has started, with a ground breaking ceremony on September 23.

Through Lakeland Catholic’s sponsorship, Bellamy said, students would have access to the theatre space.

The foundation has partnered with Grant McEwan University and Portage College in order to garner interest in the arts post-secondary.

Should the division donate to the project, specific times throughout the year would be dedicated to Lakeland Catholic School students.

Transportation Update

Almost all LCSD bus routes are filled, with the remaining expected to be up and running by mid-October, if not before.
