LAKELAND - Witnessing the small wins of students throughout their learning journey has been a rewarding part of Eva Flathers’ 45 year career with Lakeland Catholic Schools.

The now Educational Assistant (EA) is being recognized for her kind heart, patience, work ethic, and dedication to ensuring all children reach their fullest potential as Lakeland Catholic School Division’s 2024 Excellence in Catholic Education Support Staff awardee.

In addition to serving as an EA at École Notre Dame Elementary, Flathers spends hours every morning in the school kitchen preparing food for students.

“She knows her purpose and calling from God is to help form the lives of many children,” said Rachel Reid, principal of École Notre Dame Elementary School in her nomination.

Over the course of her career, Flathers has worked in various roles including providing speech supports for Preschool and Kindergarten students, and as a support for inclusive education students.

Regardless of her position at the school, Flathers said she has always treasured the unique connection she makes with students.

What she appreciates most about working in a Catholic school is the faith-based environment and how it fosters a sense of family.

When asked how it felt to be nominated, the soft spoken EA said she was honoured to be recognized.

“It’s truly a privilege,” Flathers said.

"Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it."
