This week, four groups of Grades 10–12 teachers came together to collaborate on assessment practices across Lakeland Catholic.
Through professional dialogue and shared expertise, teachers worked toward greater consistency in how student learning is assessed, with a common goal of supporting student success across the Division.

This wonderful event brought together over 150 community leaders, sector partners, grassroots organizations, and government representatives from all levels. A beautiful highlight of the forum was hearing from Knowledge Keeper Howard Mustus Jr. of the Nakota Sioux Nations. He spoke powerfully about Heart-Based Leadership, reminding us all that we are inherently part of the web of creation and built for connection.
Community leaders invited to this forum were recognized for their dedication to creating true inclusiveness in their communities, building strong newcomer relationships, and creating spaces where everyone feels a deep sense of belonging.
This gathering beautifully aligns with our deeply held value of Catholic Social Teaching: the common good is reached when we work hand-in-hand to improve the wellbeing of everyone in our schools, communities, and the wider world.

Partnerships Bring Skilled Trades Learning to Life at Assumption
Through Assumption’s Intro to Trades program, students are gaining hands-on experience in welding, carpentry and construction, electrical, mechanics and pipe fitting while exploring future education, apprenticeship and career pathways.
With support from Portage College and local industry partners MPI Oilfield, Jacknife Oilfield and Midfield Supply, students are gaining access to industry expertise, equipment and materials that strengthen hands-on learning.

The day began with time for personal reflection, encouraging Indigenous Leads to consider the experiences and perspectives they bring. From there, the group looked closely at assurance data and explored Indigenous ways of knowing and doing, with a focus on meaningful application within the Alberta curriculum.
A key focus was moving from recognition to relationship by strengthening connections with local First Nations and Métis communities, Elders and Knowledge Keepers, and identifying meaningful ways to carry this work forward within each school.
Together, our Indigenous Leads are helping ensure reconciliation is reflected in ongoing learning, relationships and action across Lakeland Catholic.

We are grateful to Fr. René for celebrating Mass with our students and helping begin the day centred in Christ. Students then took part in group discussions exploring what it means to be Chosen by God, Made for More, and the life of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, Patron Saint of Indigenous Peoples.
The day continued with lunch, games and Praise & Worship before each school’s IGNITE team came together to plan how they will help lead faith formation within their school communities throughout the year.

Today, staff across Lakeland Catholic came together for Pathways to Excellence, a Division-wide professional learning day grounded in faith, relationship and a shared commitment to the students we serve.
The day began with faith formation centred on St. Gregory the Great and Dorothy Day, inviting staff to reflect on their vocation as Catholic educators and the responsibility that comes with being entrusted with the learning, growth and well-being of students. Through their examples of servant leadership, compassion and accompaniment, staff reflected on what it means to truly know the students in their care, to recognize the dignity of each person and to see Christ in those before us. It was an opportunity to consider how our Catholic faith shapes not only what we do, but how we show up for one another and for our students each day.
Staff then came together in Communities of Practice, creating dedicated space to learn with and from colleagues, share expertise and engage in the thoughtful, collaborative work that strengthens teaching and learning across our schools.
As we approach the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the afternoon placed a meaningful focus on Indigenous Relations and Indigenous Ways of Knowing. Staff participated in a Division-wide session with Jason J Bigcharles, Indigenous storyteller and leader in the development of Indigenous Culture Based Learning, before continuing their learning within schools alongside Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers and community partners.
Pathways to Excellence reflects the kind of learning we value at Lakeland Catholic: faith-filled, relational and purposeful. This time allows our staff to deepen their vocation as Catholic educators, learn alongside one another, build meaningful relationships and better understand the students and communities they are called to serve.

Throughout the day, teachers explored active and innovative teaching methods to support LCSD’s pilot of Alberta Education’s draft Grade 7–9 Physical Education & Wellness curriculum.
Yesterday, Lakeland Catholic’s New to Admin Leadership Series gathered for its first session of the year at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic Education Centre.
Grounded in prayer and our shared Catholic mission, new principals and vice-principals reflected on stewardship and organizational excellence—the faithful care of the people, time, resources, relationships, learning spaces, and responsibilities entrusted to them.
Through reflection, collaborative discussion, and practical scenarios, participants explored how everyday decisions about staffing, budgets, schedules, student supports, safety, communication, and school culture can make Christ visible and serve the common good.
The session also emphasized humility, right relationship, listening, and ongoing learning with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities.
As our leaders begin Year 2, they carry forward a shared commitment to lead with faithfulness, courage, mercy, and love—ensuring that every decision says clearly: Christ our model. Children our focus.

Beginning with faith formation, the team reflected on the call to move from simply knowing about Christ to actively following Him—allowing faith to shape how we lead, serve, listen, and care for one another. This commitment to active discipleship grounds the organizational excellence that supports our Division’s priorities: Catholic Christian Identity, student success, and student wellness.
The team also aligned priorities, strengthened Division-wide supports, and provided coordinated leadership for our schools. These gatherings are an important part of the work that happens beyond the classroom to support what happens within it. By learning together, examining our practices, and staying connected to the needs of our schools, our leaders continue to strengthen the conditions for students and staff to thrive.

Our school administrators recently gathered at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys for a day of strategic learning, leadership development, and collaboration. Beginning with prayer and faith formation, leaders reflected on what it means to live as one family in Christ; moving from isolation or self-protection toward deeper communion, vulnerability, unity, and hope.
Throughout the day, administrators engaged in focused work connected to student achievement, well-being, literacy instruction, assessment practices, school and Division assurance priorities, and opportunities to strengthen collaboration across schools. They shared promising practices from their own school communities, examined evidence of impact, and identified ways to continue strengthening teaching and learning across Lakeland Catholic.
Grounded in the reminder that we are one Body in Christ, we also celebrated the many small acts of love that strengthen student belonging, wellness, learning, and Catholic identity in our schools.
