Lakeland Catholic School Division officially welcomed its Board of Trustees for the 2025–2029 term during a special Swearing-In Ceremony, where trustees took the Oath of Office, affirming their commitment to serve students, families, and communities through faith-filled governance and Catholic values.

Following the ceremony, the Division gathered for the Commissioning Mass, presided by His Excellency Bishop Gary Franken, entrusting our trustees to their vocation of leadership and service in Catholic education. Together with clergy, staff, and community members, we prayed for God’s grace upon those commissioned to guide our schools in His mission. Thank you, Bishop Gary Franken, for blessing our new trustees.

The day concluded with a Meet and Greet, bringing together families, leaders, and community partners in celebration.

A special thank you to MD of Bonnyville Reeve Barry Kalinski, Mayor-Elect Bob Mattice, MD of Bonnyville Councillor Caroline Palmer, City of Cold Lake Councillor Vicky Lefebvre, Town of Bonnyville Deputy Mayor Phil Kushner, and Bonnyville Councillor and Parish Council Chair David Sharun, and former long-serving trustee Mary Anne Penner for joining us and showing their support for Catholic education across our region.

We are grateful for the continued dedication of our teachers and staff, whose faith and commitment support student learning each day.

Growing Together Through Change

Lakeland Catholic support staff came together for a professional learning session on Understanding the Change Process.

The session explored change through both individual and organizational lenses, emphasizing how faith, collaboration, and compassion guide growth within our schools.

Through reflection and shared learning, staff reaffirmed that positive change strengthens our ability to serve Lakeland Catholic's students — and one another — with grace and purpose as we prepare for their return.

What does it mean to serve with purpose?
Today, our acclaimed Lakeland Catholic Board of Trustees came together for Orientation Day: a time to grow in faith, strengthen unity, and renew their commitment to serve through Christ.

Together with Division leaders, trustees explored the sacred responsibility of Catholic governance and the vital role faith plays in every decision made for our students and schools.

This was more than an introduction; it was a reaffirmation of our mission to ensure that Christ remains the cornerstone of every decision, every classroom, and every student we serve.

📘 💙Catholic Education Sunday

Today, we celebrate the gift of Catholic education, a place where faith and learning are anchored in Christ. Guided by His light, our schools are communities where hope is nurtured, knowledge is strengthened, and every child is seen as a precious creation of God.

“We have this hope, a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters the inner shrine behind the curtain.”
— Hebrews 6:18-19

As we reflect on this year’s provincial Catholic Education Sunday and Catholic education week theme, Anchored in Christ: A Beacon of Hope, we give thanks for the students, families, educators, and parish partners who journey together in faith, keeping our Catholic schools a radiant witness of God’s love!

We invite you to read this year’s special Pastoral Letters from the Catholic Bishops of Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and the Yukon, reflecting on the gift of Catholic education. Please note that Catholic Education Week has been postponed to May 9–16, 2026.

As a reminder, beginning Monday, October 6, all Lakeland Catholic schools will be closed due to strike action.

No classes (Pre-K to Grade 12)
No online learning or instruction
No busing or supervision
No extracurricular activities or events

Day care and out-of-school care will remain open only for families already registered. All other families must make alternate childcare arrangements.

We recognize the strain this places on families and thank you for your patience, understanding, and prayers. In this time of uncertainty, we hold fast to our faith and trust that God will continue to guide and strengthen our school communities. We pray for a fair and close resolution.
